Vertella Denise Bowes, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many in the Forest Hill, Texas community passed away on June 14th, 2023 in Fort Worth.
Vertella was born on January 1st, 1954 in Cleveland, Ohio to Willa Emma Cayson Dozier and Walter Dozier. She attended Texas Christian University before starting a career in cooking. She worked at Denny's and went on to work at Smokey Pete's where she made a name for herself as an amazing cook who loved to BBQ.
Vertella was a devout woman who believed strongly in her faith and was a member of the Mahanaim Christian Fellowship Church in Crowley. In her personal life, she very much enjoyed playing spades with friends and spending time with her grandkids and family. Additionally, traveling was something that brought her great joy over the years. Vertella was also a die hard Cleveland fan, there wasn’t a single team from her hometown that she didn‘t love rooting for.
She is preceded in death by Willa Emma Cayson Dozier (mother); Walter Dozier (father); David Dozier (brother); Vernon Dozier (brother); Damali Banks (nephew).
She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, James F. Bowes; Shanika D. Ofori (daughter); Maurice D. Bowes (son); Tracy Walker (stepdaughter); Sherry Way and husband, John Way (stepdaughter); DeMisha Whittaker (sister); Walter Dozier (brother); Pamela Dozier (sister-in-law); Andrew Ofori (grandson); Malaya Bowes (granddaughter); James Ofori (grandson); Cierah Jackson (step granddaughter); Vernetta Weems and husband, Joe Weems (niece), Veronica Jenkins (niece), Kyla Lacey (niece); Vernon Williams (nephew), Lee Williams and wife, Veronica Williams (nephew), Victor Jenkins (nephew), Walter Huff (nephew), William Huff (nephew); and numerous other extended family members and loving friends.
Vertella’s proudest accomplishments were being a mother and grandmother. Her family meant everything to her. Vertella made the most out of every moment spent with them and ensured they knew how much they were loved. Her passing has brought immense grief but also reflection on the countless cherished memories shared between those whose lives she touched.
