Doris Zinn Smith Wurtz

September 22, 1928 — August 9, 2021

Doris Zinn Smith Wurtz died August 9, 2021 at the age of 92. She was born September 22, 1928, to Ottie Lloyd Smith Sr. and Ila Zinn Smith in Fort Worth, Texas.

Doris made life-long friends while attending Alice Carlson Elementary, McLean Jr. High and Paschal High. She added more friends while attending Texas Tech and TCU, as well as more from her time as a teacher. For 60 plus years these friends were members of a bridge club and a sewing circle. She also belonged to Club Bon Soir for many years.

Doris received her BA degree from TCU in 1950. She married John Paul Wurtz a TCU student in July of 1950 at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth. They enjoyed 62 loving years together. John died in July of 2012.

She worked as a volunteer and employee of Camp Fire Girls during the early years of raising a family. She earned her teaching certificate in 1963 and MA in 1976. She became a history/geography teacher in 1965, starting a Meadowbrook Jr. High and then finishing her career at McLean Middle School. Doris received the local Daughters of American Revolution chapter's Outstanding American History Teacher Award in 1984. While a teacher, she sponsored several eighth-grade student trips to Washington, D.C., and to Europe. After retiring, she and John loved to travel. Besides most of the US states, they made several journeys to Europe and Asia, many accompanied by friends or family. Doris was a life-long member of Hemphill Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth where she served as a teacher of an adult Sunday school class and as an elder of the church. Later, when Hemphill Presbyterian Church was merged with First Presbyterian of Fort Worth, she served on one of the visitation committees to aid homebound members.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings Ottie L. Smith, Jr, and Ann Barrett, and grandson Lucas Agosta.

Survivors: daughters, Phyllis Herston and Jan Agosta; son, John P. Wurtz Jr.; granddaughter, Angela Head; grandsons, David Wurtz and Michael Wurtz; two great-granddaughters, Lillian Wurtz and Isabel Head; and three great-grandsons, Zachary Wurtz, William Head, Wesley Head and Gabriel Wurtz.
