Rosie Lee Butler entered eternal rest on October 15, 2026, at the age of 100. She was born on June 26, 1926, in Pace, Mississippi, and her century of life was marked by steadfast faith, deep devotion to family, and a generous spirit that reached far beyond her own home.
Mrs. Butler was, above all, a wife, mother, grandmother, and spiritual mother. Those roles were not simply titles she carried, but callings she fulfilled with tenderness, strength, and grace. On September 13, 1958, she married James Harvey Butler in Los Angeles, California, beginning a union that became a central and cherished part of her life.
Her days were also brightened by the simple pleasures she enjoyed. She loved crochet, puzzles, and crossword puzzles, pursuits that reflected both her patience and her thoughtful nature. Yet perhaps her most enduring work was found in the lives she touched through faith. Rosie Lee Butler established the “Cookie and Punch Ministry” on her backyard patio, where she shared the gospel with children on her street in Compton, California. Through that ministry, she helped shape an entire generation in her neighborhood, and its influence could be seen in those who later became pastors, ministers, elders, missionaries, choir members, ushers, musicians, and other devoted servants in the church. Her witness was personal, welcoming, and transformative, and her legacy lives on in the many hearts she guided toward service and faith.
She is survived by her loving children: her daughters, Bueasondra Lucien and Darlene Wynder; and her sons, Lindberg James, Ronnie Butler, Donald Butler, and Rodney Butler. She is also survived by her sister, Darlene Smith. Her wonderful family also consisted of 33 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren, 15 great great-grandchildren (with one on the way) as well as numerous nieces and nephews too many to name. There is also the special family at Praise Center, One Purpose and Kingdom Covenant who feel the loss of a remarkable woman. In their lives, and in the lives of all who knew her as mother and spiritual mother, her love, instruction, and example will continue to bear fruit for years to come.
Rosie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Butler; her daughter, Marilyn Butler; her sons, Theodore Butler and James Butler Jr.; her father, Robert D. Miller; her mother, Anna Reed; and her brothers, Willie Miller and Otis Miller. Their memories remained part of the story she carried throughout her life, and now that story is gathered into peace.
