Herbert L. Mccartney

October 28, 1951 — January 16, 2021

Herbert Lee McCartney was born October 28, 1951, to Harvey Jr. and Evelyn McCartney in Doucette, Texas. He graduated from Kirby High School in Woodville, where he played in the band and was a football player. After graduating high school, Herbert studied at the University of North Texas before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. After a career in the military, his occupations spanned several disparate fields and industries including the U.S. Postal Service, a club owner, and ultimately the flooring industry working with and for companies including Home Depot, Lowe’s, and his own business, MC Carpet Installation Service. He was a lifelong handyman and tinkerer and was quick to offer help or advice on household projects.

Herbert enjoyed life, friends, and family and developed relationships all over. He cemented those relationships by the numerous nicknames he collected throughout his life to include: Mac, Lil Mac, Herb, Herbie Lee, Bull, Doc, Pistol Pete to name a few. Despite all of these different relationships, Herbert was always constant in who he was. He was known for his contagious laughter, kind, joking spirit, and marching to the beat of his own drum. He made friends easily, loved cracking jokes, and hangin’ out. He believed in Jesus Christ and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Herbert passed peacefully on Saturday, January 16, 2021. He is preceded in death by his father, Harvey McCartney Jr., and mother, Evelyn (Brooks) McCartney. He leaves to celebrate his life: his loving son and daughter, Kevin (Jodi) and Christine; two brothers, Edward (Delois) and Howard (Essie); two sisters, Glinda (Frank) McKinley and Laverne (Russell) McCartney Knighton; one grandson, Garrett; special friends, Vernon Black, Charlie Edmonson, Angelia Lewis, Gloria Ford Leflore; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Lung Association in Herbert's honor.
