Leon Roy Stewart Jr., a dedicated teacher and loving family man, passed away on July 2, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of passion and devotion. Born on July 6, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas, Leon was the son of Louise A. and Leon Roy Stewart.
Leon's career as an educator spanned over four decades, with his first year serving as the Agricultural Teacher at Shephard ISD and ending with Mansfield ISD after 36 years. His love for his profession was evident in both his commitment to his students and his active involvement in professional associations, notably as a member of the Vocational Agricultural Teachers Association.
Not only was Leon highly regarded among his colleagues, but he also made a significant impact on countless young lives through his role as an agricultural teacher. He nurtured a love for learning in his students while imparting invaluable knowledge about the importance of agriculture. His dedication to education extended beyond the classroom, as he played a pivotal role in the MISD Reed-Stewart Agricultural Science Center's establishment in 1998.
Leon's educational journey began at San Saba High School before earning a degree in Agricultural Science from Tarleton State University. His thirst for knowledge served him well throughout his career and allowed him to inspire future generations.
Outside of the classroom, Leon had a deep connection with nature and pursued various hobbies such as hunting, fishing and raising Limousin Cattle and taking pride in the Stewart Family Limousin Cattle. As an advocate for stock shows, he was very supportive of his students and their beef projects.
Among Leon's many accomplishments, one that brought him immense joy was being recognized by being included in the prestigious ATAT Hall of Fame for the Agricultural Teachers Association of Texas in 2023. It was a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence throughout his career.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Leon Roy and Louise A. Stewart; son, Michael Shawn Stewart and grandson, Michael Shawn Stewart Jr.
Leon is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Stewart; daughter, Brandy King and her husband Matt; son, John Fairbanks and his wife Kathy ; grandchildren, Sarah Perry, with her husband Graham, Justin Wayne Stewart, Garrett Richard Fairbanks, Kendal Ann Subia and husband Nando, Jacob Psutka, Aden Cordell King, Cason Stewart King, and Paislee Mae King; great-grandchildren, Clifford Ellis Perry, Hannah Grace Perry, and John Thomas Perry.
He also shared a cherished bond with special friends Kenneth and Donna Willingham.
A visitation in honor of Leon Roy Stewart Jr. will be held on July 5, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Skyvue Funeral Home located at 7220 Rendon Bloodworth Rd in Mansfield, Texas. The funeral service will be held on July 6th at 10:00 AM at Walnut Ridge Baptist Church situated at 1201 TX-360 in Mansfield.
As we bid farewell to this remarkable man who touched the lives of so many, let us remember Leon for the unwavering love he had for his family and the dedication he exhibited towards his students. His passion for education and agriculture will continue to inspire generations to come. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace.
