Jessie Elzora Harvey Poindexter
July 4, 1933 – October 3, 2025
Jessie Elzora Harvey Poindexter went to be with the Lord on October 3, 2025, at the age of 92.
Born on July 4, 1933, in Waco, Texas, to loving parents John W. Harvey and Bertha I. Harvey, Jessie was a twin and the youngest of eight children. She grew up on the family dairy farm in Bellmead, Texas, where she learned the value of family and hard work, helping her parents and siblings so both the farm and the family could flourish. The love of family and the strong work ethic she formed in childhood guided her for the rest of her life.
Jessie took pride in providing for her family and creating a beautiful home. She began her career on the assembly line at the Owen Illinois Glass Plant in Waco, often working double shifts. The hours were long, and the work was tedious, yet it allowed her to support those she loved. Ever ambitious, she moved into sales with the Goldstein-Migel department store and later joined the national Bed and Bath Boutiques franchise, traveling the country to open new locations. Consistently excelling, she went on to manage the largest gift and home décor showroom at the World Trade Center in Dallas, earning top producer awards. She also owned and operated a custom drapery and upholstery business in Dallas. For more than twenty years, Jessie and her husband worked side by side running a property management company before retiring to Burleson, Texas, to be closer to family, where she lived for fifteen years.
Jessie and Hugh T. Poindexter were married for 51 years, until his passing in 2017.
The three most important things in her life were family, family, and family. She adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an excellent cook who loved to prepare everyone’s favorites and viewed holidays as the perfect chance to cook, laugh, and celebrate. One of her greatest joys was the annual family reunion. Continuing a tradition begun by her mother and aunts, Jessie and her sisters planned all year to create an event everyone would cherish.
Jessie always welcomed you with a smile, listened with care, offered wise advice, lent a shoulder when you needed it, gave a firm nudge when it would help, and kept a candy bowl ready for all. Her favorite color was purple.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John W. Harvey and Bertha I. Harvey; her siblings, J. W. Harvey, Coston Harvey, Leonard Harvey, Bobby Harvey, Lucille Ducas, Velma Mallory, and her twin sister, Bessie Collins; her husband, Hugh T. Poindexter; her daughter, Carolyn Reed; her grandson, Travis Harper; and her daughter-in-law, Karen Briscoe.
She is survived by her son, Larry Kelso; her daughter, Renee Blackwell, and husband, Ron; her son-in-law, Tommy Reed; her grandchildren, Kevin Harper, Matt Kelso and Sarah Gravlee, Marissa Kelso, Brandon Sanderson and wife Elizabeth, Rhiannon Kelso and Chris Akin, Paige Eggleston and husband Cody, Powell Kelso, Jake Blackwell and wife Kristen, and Amy Blackwell; and her great-grandchildren, Bryant Coston, Dalia Credeur, Halle Kelso, Ondra Romero, Keaton Eggleston, Brandt Kelso, Margaret Sanderson, Annabelle Sanderson, Kelso Akin, Ivory Akin, and Beau Eggleston.
