James Earl Smiley

April 11, 1943 — January 7, 2026

James Earl Smiley, a beloved figure in the lives of many, departed this world on January 7, 2026, in Arlington, Texas, at the age of 82. Born on April 11, 1943, in Henderson, Texas, James was a man whose life was defined by his unwavering dedication to family and his remarkable 55-year career with Textron Bell Helicopter.

James was a proud graduate of Henderson High School and furthered his education at a local college near Tyler, Texas. His professional journey at Bell Helicopter was marked by both passion and commitment, earning him respect and admiration from colleagues and friends alike. Throughout his career, he often spoke fondly of his time there, reflecting the profound relationships and experiences he cultivated along the way.

Beyond his professional pursuits, James was deeply dedicated to his family and community. He found immense joy in playing and coaching softball and took great pride in coaching semi-pro football. James ensured that he was an integral part of his grandchildren's lives, always present for their milestones and moments of joy. His legacy lives on through his daughters, Jennifer Smiley and Anita and Freeman Tillis, who carry forward his spirit of love and determination.

James is remembered not only by his immediate family but also by his brothers, Claude Wallace, Dennis Tate, and Marcus Tate, who shared his journey and supported him through every twist and turn of life. He cherished the time spent with his grandchildren: James B. Smiley, Ma'Monique 'Peaches' Smiley, Ashely Smiley, Freeman 'Buck' Tilles, Jakobe, Mikayla Smiley, Marissa Ramo, Jasmine, Jayden, and Nevaeah Villerreal. Each one held a special place in his heart, and he took great pride in their accomplishments.

He also leaves behind his nieces, Felica Johnson, Kimberly, and Hayden Wallace, and nephews, Lil T, Darius Tate, Derreon Ford, Derrick Goss, and Billy Goss Jr., who will fondly remember their uncle’s loving guidance and support. James shared his life generously with many family members and friends, all of whom will miss his laughter and warmth.

James's life was one of service and fellowship, having enjoyed his time as a member of the UAW Local 218 union and attending Rehoboth Baptist Church. His enduring connections were enriched by many wonderful friends, including those at Chuys Corporation, who have supported his family during their time of loss.

James is reunited with his beloved wife, Mavis Smiley; his parents, Christine and James Smiley; along with Joe, Brian, and George Wallace, as well as David Goss, Melvin Goss, and Billy Goss, all of whom he missed dearly.
