Dorothy Hicks Gatson was born in Strong, Arkansas on August 20, 1931 to Jonas Hicks and Ellen Williams Hicks. Dorothy was the 13th child of 16 children. Her parents as well as all of her siblings, except Tressie Miller of Free Hope, Arkansas, preceded her in death.
Dorothy excepted Christ at an early age at Freehope Methodist Church. She remained a member until she married at the age of 15 on August 23, 1946 to Leander Gatson Jr.
Dorothy worked in Nursing Care Facilities for 40 years. She passed her Certified Nurses Aid course with a perfect score of 100. She worked 7 years at a nursing facility in Kansas City, KS then 33 years at Swope Ridge Nursing Home in Kansas City, Mo. She also was apart of the Renaissance West Grandparents Program from 1994 -1997.
Dorothy was a member of Mt. Hebron under the leadership of the late Rev. Fate White in 1969, then became a member of Community Baptist Church from 1974-1980 under the leadership of the late Rev. Columbus Short. Dorothy began a fellowship at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church once again under the leadership of the late Rev. Fate White where she served for over 30 years as a member of the Mission Ministry, the Pantry Ministry, But most of all, anyone that knew her, was aware of her anointed hands in the Kitchen Ministry. She also served on the Mother Board at Community Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Alfred White.
From Dorothy's union to Leander Gatson Jr., who preceded her in death, ten children were born. Her sons who preceded her in death: Dr. Robert Gatson, R. Charles Gatson, Herbert Gatson, and adopted son Herman Thompson. Her daughters who preceded her in death: Sheila A. White, Sherry A. Gatson and Sally Birch Gatson. Her grandsons Henry Scott IV and John Harris Gatson also preceded her in death.
On Tuesday March 8th 2016 approximately 7:43am Dorothy heard the master say "Well Done Thy Good And Faithful Servant". She crossed the finish line of this life, and transitioned from earthly labor, to her heavenly reward.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her daughters, Brenda R. Gatson, Cynthia McCarty (husband Minister Floyd), Kathy Gatson-Joseph, and Kimberly G. Dorsey; her sons, Clifford Gatson (wife Gayle) and Rev. Dennis Ray Honeycutt; sister, Tressie Miller; sister, Helen Gatson; daughter in law, Alice C. Wadsworth; considered as daughters, Angela Stringer (husband Ken), Burnita Dixon (husband Alex), and Linda Wright (husband Richard); considered as sons, Dr. Alfred White, Larry Dorsey, and Henry Scott III; 23 grandchildren, 70 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
