Darrell John Herrera ("Coach D")
Darrell John Herrera, lovingly known to many as "Coach D," passed away peacefully at home in Arlington, Texas, on June 23, 2025, at the age of 65. Born in New York on April 24, 1960, Darrell was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend whose generous spirit and lifelong passion for coaching touched the lives of countless families.
Darrell was a proud graduate of Copperas Cove High School, Class of 1978, where he excelled as a student-athlete in baseball, track, and multiple other sports. After completing some college, he dedicated himself to providing for his family, working hard across a variety of roles, including positions at AAFES and Kellogg. In retirement, Darrell found great joy in his dream job with the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field—combining his love for baseball with his outgoing personality.
Above all, Darrell was a coach, on and off the field. For nearly 40 years, he poured his heart into youth baseball, mentoring his sons, grandsons, nephew Zeke, and countless other young athletes. His commitment to the game and to those he coached was unmatched. Even when not in the dugout, he could be found cheering from the stands, supporting his grandchildren and nieces and nephews at school events, games, and activities.
He is survived by his loving wife, Judi Kaye Herrera; his mother, Cadi Herrera; his sons, John Herrera (wife Carly) and their sons Alex and Elija, and Ryan Herrera and his children Dominic, Leila, and Riley; his sisters Marisa and Janice; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Herrera.
Darrell was a devoted family man who loved to travel with Judi and their loved ones. Known for his warmth, encouragement, and generosity, he leaves behind a legacy of love, mentorship, and joyful memories.
A Funeral Service will be held at Skyvue Funeral Home in Mansfield, Texas. Visitation will be 10am-11am Saturday July 12 and the service will beging at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites friends and loved ones to contribute to the “Coach D Fund,” which will help provide opportunities for children to play youth baseball when their families are unable to afford it—honoring Darrell’s lifelong commitment to making the game accessible to all. CashAPP $CoachDFund or send a check to Carly Herrera.
In honor of Coach D, the family encourages attendees to wear their favorite team cap—Darrell’s favorites were the Yankees and the Rangers—and to come dressed casually, just as he would have wanted. Carry forward his example: lead with love, show up for your people, and always root for the kids.
