Sam Burns

Sam Lacy Burns, 90, beloved by all, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014.
Memorial service: 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, in Skyvue Victoria Chapel. Inurnment: 2 p.m. Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
Memorials: May be made to the Widowed Person Society of Fort Worth or Military Order of the Purple Heart.
He was born in Big Spring on Feb. 8, 1923, to John L. and Nellie E. Burns as the fifth of six children. He married Dorras Anderson in Houston in 1947 after World War II service in the U.S. Army from May 1943 to October 1945.
Sam and family lived in Big Spring until 1969 when they moved to the Arlington and Burleson area. He loved family and friends and was honorable, trustworthy, innovative, dedicated and fair. It's said he never met a stranger. He was a wonderful father, dedicated grandfather, dutiful soldier and loving mate. Sam was also known to for his love of horses, longtime connection with war-time buddies, tinkering in his workshop and as a builder.
He was a BAR automatic rifleman in the 9th Infantry Division, Fox Company, fighting in the Normandy Campaign and Northern France Campaign, European, African and Middle East theaters with two Bronze Service Stars for valor, Good Conduct Medal, several Purple Hearts and Overseas Service Bars. He landed on Normandy D-Day plus four and was wounded three times by mortar fire at Saint Lo after the Cherbourg assault in July 1944. He returned to the U.S. McCloskey General Hospital, was treated and honorably discharged in October 1945.
He was a member of Octofoil/9th Infantry Division Association, Fox Company, MOPH, Widowed Persons Society, DFW Honor Flight, DAV, VFW, Masons, Eastern Star and active in all things "World War II Veterans."
He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Dorras; parents; and siblings.
Survivors: Daughters, Georgia Olivier and husband, Rene', of Mansfield and Sammie Ferguson and husband, Audie, of Lake Whitney; grandchildren, Conrad Olivier of Denver and Sophea and great-granddaughter, Maryanuth, Clay Olivier of Austin and wife, Sylvia, and great-grandchildren, Jacqueline and Rex, Cooper Ferguson of Lubbock and Callie Ferguson of Lake Whitney; sweet nieces and nephews. Also left to cherish his memory are his significant other, Anita Biver, and family, Gaylon Uselton of Dallas and wife, JoAnn, Glenda Jayne of Richland Chambers and Gregory Uselton of Arlington.
