✨ A Jewel’s Departure
The departure of a jewel has left a deep void in the hearts of the great War Canoe Houses of Amain, Kien, Alagoa, Koki, Ockiya, Berena, Omo, and Opo of Ogbolomabiri, all in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Lady Angela Wagefanyo Ockiya was more than a mother, sister, auntie, grandmother, and great-grandmother — she was a matriarch whose life touched generations.
🌸 Early Life
Born on 19th December 1939 at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Calabar, Cross River State, Lady Angela was the beloved daughter of Magnus Ofieafate Ockiya, the first son of Mingi IX, and Mrs. Regina Joe Alagoa, both of blessed memory. Fondly called “Lady” by all who knew her, she grew up with a spirit of resilience and grace. Her education began at St. Luke’s Primary School, Nembe, where she developed the discipline and neatness that would define her life. She later moved to Kano to live with her uncle, the late Robert Ockiya, and enrolled in a sewing institute for two years. Her journey of learning continued as she lived with her aunt Codellia, perfecting her sewing skills. Through the kindness of her friend, Mrs. Grace Porbeni, she secured employment with Mandillas Motors, where she worked diligently and learned to operate the telephone — a skill that reflected her adaptability and eagerness to grow.
🌼 Career & Enterprise
Lady Angela’s life was marked by industriousness and vision. She moved to Lagos, where she discovered her talent for baking, supplying cakes to offices across the city. In the 1970s, she relocated to Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where her cousin, HRH Alfred P. Diete-Spiff, helped her secure contracts to supply foodstuffs to secondary schools and the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. She also undertook renovation work and ventured into other businesses, proving herself a woman of enterprise and determination.
💖 Later Life
Lady Angela was not only a mother to her three biological children but also a nurturing figure to many others. Her home was a place of warmth, discipline, and love. She taught neatness to the core, instilling values that shaped the lives of her children and grandchildren. In 1997, she obtained a visa to the United States of America and relocated in January 1998. Her presence was magnetic — everyone who encountered her could not help but love her. She was a mother and friend to all, a pillar of strength, and a source of encouragement.
